Actress Tshofolelo Moledi, who formerly played Meme on Muvhango, has departed the soap to pursue her theatrical career.
Moledi has spent four successful years with Muvhango, with her characters outrageous shenanigans driving many a plotline.
Meme was a snappily dressed gold-digger on the SABC2 show, a social climber with an eye for rich and powerful men. The actress who played her told the Sowetan that she found it difficult to relate to Meme’s snobbery.
“In real life I am the opposite of that. I am a township girl, having been born and brought up in Mabopane. I still clean the house in the morning whenever I am at home,”
“My father still guides me in how I must carry myself in the entertainment field.
“Even though he is not in the industry, as he is an ordinary clerk at a bus company, he is well versed about what happens in the entertainment industry. I listen to him for guidance.
“It is for this reason that I will always know who I am and know that whatever role I play on TV it is a role. The moment they say cut, I take off the costumes that I regard as uniform for work, dress in my own clothes and leave Meme behind and Tsholo takes over.”
Monedi said that being a soap star in South Africa comes with a lot of pressure, as friends and colleagues expect you to behave in a certain way.
