With Season 1 of the Nike Academy now well underway, the squad had the opportunity to train with another legend of the game, Reneilwe Letsholonyane.
The South African football midfielder for SuperSport United F.C and Bafana Bafana joined the young players on the field for their training drills at the Nike Training Centre in Soweto.
Growing up in Soweto and having to make his way through various development structures to become a professional player, Letsholonyane emphasised the value of the opportunity that Nike is providing young talented players in South Africa through the Nike Academy.
“It is important to have such training programmes because the game of football has changed and continues to evolve, so we need a different mindset; we need different types of skills in order to produce world class players. Through a programme like this with qualified coaches who can adapt to changes in the game, I believe that we can produce good players.
I have always maintained that we have talent in South Africa, and the Nike Academy will help that talent to mature. My advice to these young players is just to enjoy every moment of the training, to learn as much as they can, and to value the platform that Nike is giving them to improve their skills and be exposed to opportunities at a professional level.”
Week 5 of the Nike Academy (19 June 2017) will see the squad playing two friendly matches against teams from the Soweto Football Association, namely Dube Continental FC and Pimville 11 FC, giving the players an opportunity to test their technical skills and put their game tactics into play.
