A LOOK AT: Virgil Abloh’s transparent CDJs and mixer for Pioneer DJ

“I aimed to design a see-thru and non-labelled rendition to inspire a different sound while DJing”

Designer, DJ and stylist Virgil Abloh has linked up with Pioneer DJ to create a unique transparent (see-thru) version of the Japanese company’s CDJ-2000NSX2 CDJ and DJM-900NXS2 mixer.

Speaking about the project, Abloh said “As a means to give a new look and feel to the industry standard of the CDJ and DJM, I aimed to design a see-thru and non-labelled rendition of the classic models to inspire a different sound while DJing. And perhaps a new way for music technology and human interaction to equal a different result”.

From June 10 to September 22, 2019, Virgil Abloh will exhibit the NXS2 “skeleton” models at his first museum exhibition entitled “FIGURES OF SPEECH”. The “TRANSPARENT” CDJ-2000NXS2 and “TRANSPARENT” DJM-900NXS2 will be on show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Abloh’s hometown of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. (Chicago Museum of Modern Art). The exhibition is the first to look at Abloh’s work that transcends industries, connecting music, fashion and architecture.

Pioneer DJ’s involvement in the “FIGURES OF SPEECH” exhibition allows the brand to re-evaluate the current design treatment of the flagship DJ equipment and strip down to its skeleton. The “TRANSPARENT” CDJ-2000NXS2 multiplayer and “TRANSPARENT” DJM-900NXS2 digital mixer were created specifically for Virgil Abloh in solidarity with this movement, which is referred as the “Pioneer DJ c/o Virgil Abloh™” project.

“Virgil Abloh’s creations can’t be defined by genre. He boldly connects various art forms, demonstrating unlimited creative possibilities to audiences around the world, and this embodies DJing. Supported by DJs who straddle the boundaries of music and creating new stories, this year, the CDJ series will celebrate its 25th anniversary. We hope that our collaboration with Virgil Abloh will trigger a new story for our customers and our company, and lead to the further development of DJ culture.” said Kio Moriwaki, president and CEO, Pioneer DJ.

This see-thru CDJ and mixer will be featured alongside a series of other selected work at the exhibition – otherwise, do stay tuned to know if Pioneer DJ and Virgil might be releasing this.
