Jazz great Wynton Marsalis – winner of nine Grammy Awards® and the first jazz musician to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music – is the headline act at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz 2011 and Marsalis will perform at Emperors Palace on Thursday August 25.
The legendary trumpeter whose creativity has been celebrated throughout the world is arguably the biggest jazz artist to come to South Africa. Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, educator and a leading advocate of American culture. He is the world’s first jazz artist to perform and compose across the full jazz spectrum from its New Orleans roots to bebop and modern jazz.
By creating and performing an expansive range of new music for quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to symphony orchestras, tap dance to ballet, Wynton has expanded the vocabulary for jazz and created a vital body of work that places him among the world’s finest musicians and composers. Marsalis is currently the Artistic Director of Jazz at New York’s famous Lincoln Center.
Festival promoter, Peter Tladi of T-Musicman says: “Wynton’s visit is going to shake up the local jazz scene. Three of the Marsalis brothers – Branford, Delfeayo and Jason – have already performed at Standard Bank Joy of Jazz but this is the big one. It is a real coup for the festival.”
Other performing artists include the Gauteng Jazz Orchestra featuring the Soul Sisters Nokukhanya, Nombulelo and Wanda Baloyi.
