The KZN auditions of Idols season eight kicked off in a festive holiday atmosphere on Saturday, 11 February, in what has to be the most scenic spot ever for an Idols audition: the promenade at uShaka Marine World in Durban.
Spirits ran high at uShaka as the Idols camera crew worked among the usual Saturday joggers, vendors selling shark soft toys, and impressive lifeguards patrolling the promenade to make sure no-one got injured in the scuffle.

First in the queue was 17 year-old Kimberley Van Vuuren from Glenwood, who started queuing on Friday at 17:00, despite the threat of overnight rain. But far from dampening the Idols enthusiasm, this morning’s cloud cover brought welcome relief from the oppressive February heat of the past few days, and by the time Idols host ProVerb turned up on Saturday to greet the contestants they were all raring to go!
On Saturday, 18 February auditions move to the GrandWest Casino And Entertainment World in Cape Town and the final auditions for 2012 will take place at the Walter Sisulu Hall in Kliptown, Soweto, on Saturday, 25 February.
Season 8 of Idols is a co-production between M-Net and Mzansi Magic and will be broadcast on both channels from June 2012. As in previous years, Idols entrants must be at least 16 years-old and no older than 30 on the day of their auditions, and all contestants must present a valid ID document to enter. A parent or a legal guardian must accompany entrants younger than 18 years of age.
