Soweto is internationally known. It’s where one can wine and dine, do activities and visit tourist hot spots and do everything in between. For the past 6 years locals and international tourists have been enjoying something different. Stand Up Comedy though the Soweto Comedy Festival. The festival is back and this time around with a twist. The twist is that the comedians will be having their own State of the nation address. They will be doing their normal jokes and some jokes based on Pres Jacob Zuma’s State of the national address. This year’s Soweto Comedy Festival will see the finest local and international comedians dishing out the funniest gags and it will be done over 2 nights at one of Soweto’s premium hangout spots – Sedibeng Pub and Restaurant. Yoursie Thomas an international comic based in Atlanta, USA, will be headlining the festival and also to re-launch The Jo’burg premium Comedy Nights that will take place every Wednesday at Darkie Café, Anderson Street, Jo’burg.
This year’s main host, producer and founder of the festival, Kedibone Mulaudzi, is just what the doctor ordered. Having shared the stage with the likes of Chris Rock and being the regular host of the weekly Soweto Premium Comedy Nights, Jo’burg Premium Comedy Nights at Darkie Café, Anderson Street, Tshwane Comedy Nights at The South African State Theatre and other nights he is just the right clown to host the festival. The headliner Yoursie Thomas, from Atlanta, USA has appeared on The Def Comedy Jam, Comic View and other premium American comedy shows. The festival also features other top local comedians. Nqoba Ngcobo, Judy Jake and the Young Gunz of SA comedy Lwando Mahlakata, Jay Boogie and Thobie Khanyile will be on stage doing what they do best. Nqoba bring his off the rail style of comedy where any topic goes and Miss Judy Jake, one of the few successful female comedians will give the festival the feminine touch it needs. The Young Gunz brings their youthful energy to the stage. This is a fest not to be missed.
This year’s festival promises nothing less than fireworks (not actual fireworks people!). The festival has grown in the last 5 years. The last 5 years’ shows were sold out, so people are advised to get the deals today to avoid disappointment as tickets are limited. Tickets are R200, but when you buy via Groupon it will cost you R100. There are limited complimentary tickets.
