If 2012 sowed the seeds of anticipation, Motif-recording artist Reason is witnessing nothing short of a bumper harvest in 2013.
Not only is his current album Audio 3D in the running for South African Music Awards’ 2013 Best Rap Album category, the other coveted award for which he is nominated – Best Male – indicates clearly that the former battle rapper is now a recognizable mainstream figure.
Audio 3D’s lead single, and former national and regional radio station number one (Metro fm, 5fm, Ukhozi fm) Do It Like I Can, and its follow-up buzz track A Lot On My Mind produced by South African Music Award winner 37mph, have set the bar high for Reason’s new single Tla K’o Bone.
Fortunately, he is prepared. The super production ensemble I.V. League (AKA, Khuli Chana, PRO, Kabelo) supply the Motswako-inspired beat for Tla K’o Bone and Morafe’s singer/songwriter KG lays down the chorus.
“After a long night of partying, losing my phone and sleeping on a friend’s couch coz I couldn’t go home, me and KG linked up one Saturday and wrote the song together,” recalls Reason adding, “we wanted to make a song that would recognize and acknowledge the ladies and how beautiful they are.”
The result is this versatile number – a song for the club, for the radio, for the ride which blends sensuality so effortlessly with the street values of Hip-hop.
It’s been a long time coming but it appears that South Africa’s record music industry is ready to bestow on Hip-hop the credit its due. Reason adds to his growing list of accolades and contends with the country’s absolute best at SAMA 13.
Tla K’o Bone, another installment in his consistent body of work shows and proves just why Motif-records’ star player deserves his place at the table of honour.
