SHIFT talks about Izikhothane on SABC1 at 11am on 15 October.
Izikhothane is street slang, derived from the Zulu word ukukhothana, which means ‘to lick’. Izikhothane gatherings often culminate in the burning of expensive designer clothes and even money. It’s about standing out from the crowd; proving to your mates that you are so rich that expensive possessions mean nothing. The Izikhothane battles are usually held at a local park or other open spaces. Some people have compared Izikhothane to the Swenkas. On SHIFT we want to know if there is a comparison and what are the reasons for young people to be part of Izikhothane groups. Our studio guests are Izikhothanes, a mother of a Skothane, a psychologist and a sociologist.
Would you buy your child clothes if they wanted to be a Skothane Answer Yes/No
