Samsung Electronics South Africa has announced its plan to open a television manufacturing plant in The Dube Trade Port in Durban by the end of the year.
“This project is the result of close collaboration between Samsung and the South African authorities – at National and Provincial level,” said Matthew Thackrah, deputy managing director of Samsung Electronics South Africa.
This will involve a total investment of $20-million (US) until 2018, Samsung said in a press release on Tuesday, 29 July 2014.
“Samsung remains the leading consumer electronics brand in South Africa and we are determined to add value to the South African community in which we operate,” he said.
Thackrah also said that the establishment of the new plant is another step towards their goal of creating new business opportunities, products, and technology.
Samsung said the project was given the green light after thorough feasibility studies.
In association with local authorities, it was also able to expedite progress on the project, which Samsung said will deliver socio-economic benefits to KwaZulu-Natal and its residents.
“The manufacturing facility will provide job opportunities and encourage the development of skilled and unskilled labour in the region,” Samsung said.
“Samsung South Africa is continuously exploring opportunities which will benefit the country,” Thackrah said. “Durban is aligned with these goals and this is an exciting step forward for the company.”
