Taxi operators in Gauteng must register their vehicles with the SA National Road Agency Limited (Sanral) in order to be exempted from paying e-tolls, the agency said on Saturday (2014-07-26).
“Sanral would like to inform members of the NTA that if there are any new taxis issued with operating licenses by the Gauteng provincial government that are not yet exempted, they should register these taxis with Sanral in order to be exempted,” spokesman Vusi Mona said in a statement.
This followed concerns expressed by the National Taxi Alliance (NTA) with regards to exemptions.
Mona said Sanral also acknowledged the Congress of SA Trade Unions’s right to protest.
“Everyone has the right to protest as enshrined in the South African Constitution, as long as this protest is done within the guidelines of the law,” he said.
Earlier this week, Cosatu’s Gauteng provincial secretary Dumisani Dakile called on motorists to continue using the highways without paying their e-toll bills.
“We are calling upon our people to continue to defy the system and those who received the bills must burn them,” he said in a statement.
“We would be convening a big burning ceremony in front of Sanral office in due course for the public to bring their bills for us to collectively burn them as part of our defiance campaign.”
