We caught up with ELLE magazine South Africa’s first ever local style reporter,Trevor Stuurman to tell us about his love for fashion & photography.
When did your love for photography & fashion begin?
I can never remember a time in my life when fashion or photography were not part of my life.
What motivated or inspired you to step in the fashion & photography career?
I studied visual and dramatic arts so fashion and photography was a natural process and the right thing to do for me.
When was your breakthrough & how did it benefit your growth in the industry?
Winning the Elle Style Reporter Search in 2012. This truly fast tracked my career and put right in the heart of all things fashion.
What are the current projects you’re involved in currently?
Currently working on a passion project which I will launching end of January.
Where would you like to take the fashion scene in few years to come?
I’d like to take fashion back in time but move it forward with technology.
How would you define your personal style in fashion? In photography?
Afrocentric/sporty/preppy
Your photography is more of street style? Is there a story behind this?
I love characters and costumes. Everyone has a story to tell though their ootd and i love capturing that. I studied costume and styling for Motion Picture.
With exploring different places & cities in photography, what city or location has always been close to your heart?
Johannesburg, I’m in love with forward going and groundbreaking energy.
Our local fashion has evolved from trend to trend and style to style seasonally, How would describe the local fashion?
Fun, free and fearless.
If there was one factor you would change about our local fashion what would it be?
More support for local designers. We honestly need to buy more local.,
With celebs being the spotlight when it comes to fashion, Who would you describe the most stylish celeb locally?
The Prince of Prints: Chu Suwanupa, Drum/You Magazine Fashion Director.
What’s your favorite season of the year and why?
Winter. It separates the boys from the men when it comes to fashion.
Your favourite local designer ?
I have 2: Rich Mnisi of OATH and Laduma of MaXhosa.

Where to from here? Future plans?
The future remains an exciting place. I have absolutely no plan for 2015 but all I know is that the best is yet to come.
