Not long after dismissing South Africa as a potential market for its movie-on-demand service, Netflix last week announced South Africa will be among the countries that Netflix expands to in the next two years, a netflix spokesperson told MyBroadband last week thursday (January 22, 2015).
“Our international expansion strategy over the last few years has been to expand as fast as we can while staying profitable on a global basis,” CEO Reed Hastings said in a letter to shareholders on Wednesday (January 21, 2015).
Netflix offers an Internet video streaming service, of Movies, TV Series.
However South Africa’s, Digital Media, which operates StarSat in South Africa, had something to say about Netflix’s plans, it spoke to MyBroadband that “its direct-to-home satellite TV service is very different from the type of service Netflix offers”.
The broadcaster said Netflix will bring some needed competition to the VOD market in South Africa.
“South Africa considers itself a free market society, so we should welcome competition from across the globe,” said On Digital Media.
