Hearing a siren go off and having to have your gear ready in less than two minutes because lives need to be saved. Sounds crazy right? Welcome to just another day in the life of an emergency and rescue professional. We rely on the skills and passion of these individuals to swoop in when we are the most vulnerable. It could be as simple as a sick elderly woman or a life-and-death struggle resulting from massive trauma. It’s a day in the life of an emergency and rescue individual. No day is ordinary or routine – that much is a given and no one knows that better than these 4 Centrum Guardians finalists. It is a standard requirement that an emergency and rescue individual be able to quickly assess patients and provide initial medical attention. These individuals have shown in their own ways what dedication and excellence looks like.
Put yourself in their position for a second. So what on earth do you have to do first? The first thing you have to do is assess the patient to establish priorities. The objective is to figure out what exactly the emergency is in order to administer the right care. In order to do this you have to rely on your training. Number two? Stabilise the patient. You can’t exactly go any further without actually calmly establishing what care is needed. This includes checking if the patient is conscious or bleeding for example. Hectic right? That is exactly why it’s so important to give props to individuals who do this on a daily basis.
There are so many risks involved that go beyond physical strain. Bad weather and tough neighbourhoods being just two examples. Luckily for our Centrum Guardians finalists, they will not be deterred.
A Centrum Guardian must be intelligent, confident, coordinated and strong. They must also be willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to save lives.
