South Africans who are passionate about the environment and determined to make a difference are encouraged to submit entries for the Sony Pictures Television Networks (SPTN) Picture This Festival with the South African contest opening today (July 4).

SPTNโ€™s environmental responsibility campaign, which started in 2015, gets its own festival with the Picture This Festival , celebrating the stories of hope and progress in the protection and preservation of the environment to be held on the Sony lot in Los Angeles, California, later this year.

The festival will curate short videos (from 30 seconds to seven minutes) which share stories, both big and small, of successful endeavours or actions that could lead to a better, environmentally sound world. The content, to be showcased at the festival, will be selected by contests held in Sony Pictures Television Networksโ€™ regions (South Africa, the UK, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Latin America, Asia and the US).

Regional winners will be flown to Los Angeles, courtesy of festival sponsor American Airlines, where they will enjoy a day of events and a Hollywood screening on the Sony Pictures lot in October. The global winner will be announced, based on the power of their storytelling and their illustration of the Picture This campaign: Picture a Better World. The winner receives $5,000 USD (around R75 000) and a Sony 4K package consisting of a 55โ€ 4K TV and a Sony Alpha a6300 Mirrorless Camera, courtesy of Sony Electronics.

The South African leg of the contest opens today (July 4) and closes on September 4. The winners will be announced on September 16 after the screening of the top 10 South African entries.

Judging the South African entries are Michelle Constant, CEO at Business and Arts South Africa, a partnership between the corporate sector and the Department of Arts and Culture; Warren Holden, Screen Africa editor and singer and TV personality, singer and songwriter Coenie de Villiers.
