Technology is now taking it’s tall and dominating daily. And it’s now set to improve the way passengers pay in taxis.
After reporting about this system last year, Now it has been revealed that new e-ticket system is implemented and will allow taxi users to be able to swipe a card when making a payment for a trip.
A report by News24 reveals that the system has been tested at the Bosman Street Taxi Rank (PTA), and will officially go live from February 2017 in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Mabopane routes.
With plans to have the system rolled out nationally in next five years, local taxis will be equipped with e-ticket system together with a GPS device which acts as a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing taxi users to browse the internet while driving.

According to the Gauteng department of roads and transport, the taxi e-ticketing system is owned and being implemented by Fairpay, of which TaxiChoice – the commercial arm of the South African National Taxi Council – is currently the sole shareholder, with Curve Group Holdings as the primary technology partner.
The Gauteng MEC for roads and transport, Ismail Vadi, said that the idea of an e-ticket for the taxi industry is “a step in the right direction that will result in a single electronic system for public transport in Gauteng”.
The e-ticket system has been under development for five years and, after extensive testing, is ready to be implemented.
“The system has now been tested thoroughly, and is fully compliant with all laws and regulations, as well as requirements of all the parties involved. We are ready for the rollout,” said Jonathan Msibi, chairperson of TaxiChoice.
Msibi said that commuters need to use a fully compliant Europay, Mastercard or Visa bank card.
News24 further revealed that ; Taxi operators also stand to benefit from this, because they would move towards formal banking for transactions which would help their creditworthiness.
