We saw brand new local films making it to nationwide cinemas and international screens. Below we bring you four of the best films we have watched in 2016. The list is influenced by popularity, reach and the impact of characters in the industry.

1. Queen of Katwe
“Queen of Katwe” is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
Directed by Mira Nair from a screenplay by William Wheeler based on the book by Tim Crothers, “Queen of Katwe” is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher and John Carls with Will Weiske and Troy Buder serving as executive producers. The film stars Golden Globe® nominee David Oyelowo (“Selma”), Oscar® winner and Tony Award® nominee Lupita Nyong’o and newcomer Madina Nalwanga.
2. Happiness is a Four-Letter Word
SA talent – Khanyi Mbau, Mmabatho Montsho and Renate Stuurman star in 2016 local film ‘Happiness is a Four-Letter Word’.
Screened February 2016, the film is an adaptation of the Cynthia Nozizwe Jele novel, which follows the lives of three strong and determined friends, who learn that happiness doesn’t exactly come with a manual. Mmabatho Montsho plays a role Nandi, Khanyi Mbau as Zaza, and Renate Stuurman as Princess.
The story revolves around perfectionist lawyer Nandi, glamorous housewife Zaza and trendy art gallery owner Princess, who seem to be living the new South African dream: money, success, and loving partners. The three friends juggle life’s surprising changes as they come to learn that ‘happiness doesn’t come with a manual. The three will have to find out what truly makes each of them happy and then fight to get it in their unique way.
3. Mrs Right Guy
This romantic comedy film tells a story of a young woman (Gugu played by Dineo Moeketsi) who rejects love long before it can get too close to rock her self-imposed exile from love, but to find bliss with the right guy she must first realise that no man is created equal, and that in love nice guys have staying power. ‘Mrs Right Guy’ was directed by Adze Uga and features a-list cast; Dineo Moeketsi, Thapelo Mokoena, Thando Thabethe, Lehasa Moloi, Tau Maserumule, Boity Thulo and more.
4. Dora’s Peace
Directed by Konstandino Kalarytis, Dora’s Peace is an action/drama film about a Hillbrow prostitute who uses the knowledge she has gained from working the streets to protect a talented young boy from the violent world of organized crime. The movie is a co-production by One Man Band and the National Film and Video Foundation and was written by Andrew Herold.
The cast includes: Khabonina Qubeka, Danny Keogh, Hlubi Mboya, Ronnie Nyakale, Molefi Monaisa, Paballo Koza, Meren Reddy, Denel Honeyball, Israel Makoe, Tinah Mnumzana, Yule Masiteng, Manaka Ranaka, Masilo Magoro, Blessed Boshomane, Omo Kondile, Sebelethu Bonkolo.
