Music Business 101 : What it takes to be in the Music Industry

These days every young person dreams of doing something big in the music industry, some dream of being the biggest rappers, DJs, Singers, winning that song of the year award or perhaps just become a music professional who works behind the scenes to help other artists succeed in their musical careers.

Whatever your dream is within the music industry, as the year starts you need to take that first step of making that dream a reality. Itโ€™s not an easy thing to succeed in the music industry but with passion hard work and dedication, itโ€™s all possible. In this article we will look at what it truly takes to succeed in this industry.

Passion

Itโ€™s easy to go learn how to DJ or produce music or any other role in the industry, these daysโ€™ even bad singers or bad vocalist can fine tune their voice using software. You can go to school and learn all these different crafts but at the end of the day, itโ€™s the amount of passion and desire thatโ€™s burning inside you that will make you stand the test of time. I remember this other quote, canโ€™t remember the author of it but it went like โ€œPeople will come and go every time and those who stand for something will stayโ€. So when the tough times come , only those with a true passion for music will remain.

Talent

As much as people say hard work beats talent when talent doesnโ€™t work hard, But when talent puts in the work as well, thereโ€™s not stopping that. At the end of the day even though youโ€™ve got the best marketing team and all connects , they still need to market the best work and talent will help you achieve that. And Some musical skills and techniques come natural; no amount of school or training can teach that.

Hard work

If you’re looking to do something bigย in the music business this is notย going to happen on its own, you’ll need a plan,ย you’ll need to put in a ton of work to makeย that plan happen and of course there’sย no guarantee that the plan will workย or that you won’t change it a million times. But the bottom line is you will have to work hard and sacrifice a lot of things. Sometimes you might need to work day and night for the whole week.

Dedication & Perseverance

When you do decide to do something big and put in the work, remember success is never guaranteed.ย Failure is always a possibility and allย the feelings and emotions that come with it.ย Fear of failure and embarrassment andย insecurities. The Paranoia, why aren’t people seeingย my obvious talent, why won’t they answerย my phone calls, why won’t they help me?ย Trying to do something big in life is inherently uncomfortable; it invitesย all kinds of judgment. Thus you need to persevere through all of this, even when it seems like things are going slowly and ย nothing is happening, you need to have the ability to keep going and donโ€™t let it affect your hustle.

Lastly if the music industry is something that keeps youย up at night and you think about it all day, then my advice is to go for it with all you’ve got. Make this day the day you go from dreamer to doer.

But just remember that if you’re looking to do something big,ย it’s not going to happen overnight.ย You need to get started right now.ย Time waits for no one.

โ€œDream it and do it.โ€
