All things you need to know about the new MTV Shuga ‘Down South’

We’re just days away from the premiere of MTV Shuga – Season 5, dubbed ‘Down South’.
So before the premiere (08 March 2017), we thought, why not give you some heads-up on few interesting things you have to know about the new and old seasons. Fusing sexual and other public health messaging with world-class storytelling and appealing, believable characters, MTV Shuga new season picks up the story some months after the end of season 4, turning its lens on the issues of sexual and reproductive health among teenagers and young women in South Africa.

Here are interesting things to know about MTV Shuga ‘Down South’:

 

– Lupita Nyong’o was starring on the first Season of MTV Shuga, which aired in 2009. Tiwa Savage, Chris Attoh, Ice Prince, Patoranking made apperances on previous seasons.

 

– Tanzanian superstar , Vanessa Mdee aka Vee Money will star on #MTVShugaDS , with cameo performances from Seyi Shay and SA’s very own – Kwesta.

 

– MTV Shuga will for the first time base it’s production right here in South Africa, after years of producing in Kenya then later in Naija. #MTVShugaDS is set in Johannesburg, more in Braamfontein area.

 

– The OG’s of this TV Show, Nick Mutuma (Leo), Emmanuel Ikubese (Femi) and Adesua Etomi (Sheila) will remain and still play major roles on #MTVShugaDS

 

– Local rappers, Nasty C and Ma-E together with Seyi Shay are responsible for the title/official track of #MTVShugaDS.

– The series will also air on other terrestrial broadcasters and other Viacom-owned networks and third party broadcasters around the world, including MTV Base (DStv Channel 322), BET (DStv channel 129) and BET International from 08 March 2017. Other elements of the campaign will include a radio drama series, peer educator programme, comic book, mobile information service, social media and a range of digital platforms.

 

– First aired in November 2009 on MTV Base as part of an initiative dubbed “MTV Staying Alive Ignite!”. The series is produced by the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and MTV Base, MTV Shuga, an award-winning ”edutainment” drama that has been proven to actively change behaviour relating to HIV prevention.

 

#MTVShugaDS will introduce new cast members , but you already know some of these faces;
– Vanessa Mdee as already mentioned
– Clint Brink
– ‘Scandal!’ actor Thuso Mbedu,
– 17-year old Jezriel Skei, best known for his role on “Four Corners” (2013)
– Phila Mazibuko
– Given Stuurman (Invictus, Konig Otto, Straight Outta Benoni)
