RECAP: Episode 2: NIKE ‘Rebels on Air’ with Mkay Frash & Khuli Chana

Celebrating Air Max month, Nike and YFM 99.2 partnered to bring you a sneaker-cultured radio show ‘Rebels on Air’.
The show brings together creatives and icons to share their journey in the culture and their undenied love for sneakers. This past Saturday (11 March) was the second episode with Mkay Frash and Khuli Chana as the rebels. Hosted by Scoop Makhathini and DJ Entro, the show brought so many memories taking us back to the days when the culture was different to what it is today. This is the same Saturday when Nike was launching the Air Max 1 ‘Master.’ As a master, Mkay Frash took us back to high school days when he was collecting his first pair of sneakers and being style influenced by his uncles. Then years later he arrived in Joburg city while working with Magents brand.

His unique style of fashion, influence and working with Nike began back then when he met uSanele and Okmalumkoolkat. Then later it all lead to the beginning of Boyz n Buckz. Since then he has been able to launch his online platform ‘Hunting For Kicks’ which he uses to document local sneaker culture and trends. Frash emphasised how he loves the way Nike brought together pieces from a number of Air Max sneakers to create the beautiful Air Max 1 ‘Master.’

 

Then another master in SA hip-hop and motswako, Khuli Chana! He is no stranger to the game. Khuli hopped on the mic straight after Mkay Frash to tell us where the motswako flavour began. Khuli reminded the YFM listeners about Morafe and where it all began. He also mentioned the relationship he shares with Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP), JR, AKA, and Tuks whom all played a major role during the come up journey. All his achievements to this day all proves what a true master he is.
Khuli also talked about his love for Nike brand and talked on how perfectly Air Max 1 ‘Master’ represents Motswako. Just like bringing together all the pieces on this sneaker, motswako is a flavour of different styles, New York Hip Hop, Joburg style and they all make that perfect motswako sound.
