The sensational New School R&B vocalist, Thabsie has released her anticipated album titled ‘Songs About You.’
The album is packed with 10 solid tracks. Thabsie’s journey began with doing some major features with likes of Psyfo, Kwesta, JR, and Kid X and she has decided to present those major names on her tracklist. For someone who has followed her journey, you will know Thabsie is popular for her beautiful flow in R&B which also fits in a Hip Hop jams (of course not forgetting her popular presentation on Kwesta’s Ngiyaz’fela Ngawe). And the album carries exactly that type of sound fused with a touch of neo-soul and afro-beats elements. For some reason when you start playing few tracks into the album you get that Jhené Aiko’s type of flavour here and there.
Thabsie opens up the album with Thank You, lyrical and mellow jam which is an introduction of the entire tracklist. Mind Games is another solid jam you will get stuck on, still R&B flow and laid back. On this song is crying out to his lover who’s playing mind games with her, even though he cannot let go of him (you make me vulnerable, I know it’s best for me but I can’t seem to let you go).
And we get to see more of Thabsie versatility on Cry, where she features Kid X who delivers a solid verse on the beat. This one of those R&B/Hip-Hop mellow jams with a groovy element to it. Run Back is a song about a girl who’s not afraid to let go of her lover coz she knows he’ll be back for more.
Psyfo comes in as a guest on 4am, another groovy jam with a vibey and vernac lyrical content from Thabsie.
Other jams you will enjoy on the album includes; Skhathi Sam’ feat. Kwesta, African Queen feat. JR – a supa duba afro-beat jam which is a sing-along , Ubuyanini and close it off with the so soulful and laid back Special (My Melody).
Indeed this is a solid debut from Thabsie, from lyrical content, production, presentation of each track, and the sound. The message on the album is on point talking, love, relationships, beauty, funk/joy and you’re still able to have a groove after all. We can confidently say this is a must-have album for anyone who’s into both the R&B and mellow Hip-Hop. And for the fact that this showcases a number of local rappers makes it a more relevant project to brag about.
