What happens to your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram accounts when you die?

So much of our life is tied up in social media these days, documenting our day-to-day memories – but do you ever ask yourself as to what will happen to your social media account/s when you die?

Even though most users prefer keeping their password private so that no one can have access to their accounts, Facebook is aware of that and you are able to tell them in advance whether youโ€™d like to have your account memorialized or permanently deleted.

So what does memorialize mean?

When you memorialize your account it means your account will be active, but it will no longer be searchable, accept new โ€˜friendsโ€™ nor appear in โ€˜People You May Knowโ€™ย section, nor can anyone log in to the profile. The word Remembering will be shown next to the name on your profile. The photos and posts will still be on your wall and visible to the audience it was shared with.

Deleting your account

You can choose to have your account permanently deleted should you pass away.
– From the top right of Facebook, click [down arrow] and select Settings – from the left menu, click General –ย  Click Manage Account then Click Request account deletion and follow the on-screen instructions.

Deleting a deceased personย account

You need to provide a copy of the death certificate and evidence that you have the authority to request its removal, eg: the will or the estate letter, or a birth certificate to show you are related to the user.

To delete a Facebook account when someone dies, go to Settings – Security – click Legacy Contact, then request account deletion.

What happens to your Twitter account when you die?

With Twitter, you need to complete a form to report the death of a user and deactivate the account. And you will need to provide the username, the death certificate and proof of your identity and relationship with the deceased.

And what about Instagram?

Instagram can memorialise or deactivate an account in a similar way to Facebook.
