Ahead of Kanye West’s adidas x YEEZY Calabasas Track Pants release, let’s take a journey to the City of Calabasas, to give you the distinct idea behind the name, the story of the city and the design of the adidas x YEEZY Calabasas merchandise.
Enjoy the read below:
The name ‘Calabasas’
The Calabasas line is named after the L.A. suburb with two competing theories about the etymology of the name; it probably derives from either a Chumash word, calahoosa, or the Spanish calabaza, both of which mean “gourd” and in honor of its namesake, the City of Calabasas and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce hold an annual Pumpkin Festival in October.
The City of Calabasas
Calabasas is a city on the outskirts of Los Angeles and is accessible just like any other city. However, the most famous community in Calabasas, The Oaks, is guard gated luxury community that offers its residents both luxury properties and top-level security. In addition to top-level security, The Oaks has many great community features including miles of hiking trails, a fitness center and gym with state of the art equipment, tennis courts, and an Olympic sized swimming pool. The Oaks gained notoriety in 2014 after Justin Bieber egged his neighbor’s home. Bieber has since moved out of the property.
Located next to the city of Calabasas and in the west San Fernando Valley, is the gated community of Hidden Hills which is actually considered its own municipality. Hidden Hills is one of the oldest gated communities in Southern California, designed and built in the ’50s by landscape architect A.E. Hanson, who also built the wealthy Rolling Hills gated community in Palos Verdes and Harold Lloyd’s “Greenacres” mansion in Benedict Canyon. Hidden Hills is the second-richest (ahead of Bel Air) and whitest (ahead of Malibu) neighborhood in Los Angeles.
Who lives in Calabasas?
The first reality show to take over the suburb of Calabasas was Newlyweds, which followed the daily life of then husband and wife Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson in their West Valley mansion. Will Smith and his family, Michael Jackson’s children, and Britney Spears have also called Calabasas home at some point or another. But the Kardashians basically owns half of the homes and are still perhaps the most well-known Calabasas residents, also a home to the likes of Kanye West, Drake, Miley Cyrus, and other celebrities.
In Drake’s verse on “2 On/Thotful,” he says “Crib in Calabasas man I call that sh** the safe house / Thirty minutes from L.A., man the shit is way out.”
The original asking price for Drake’s Hidden Hills house was $27 million in 2009, but the price dropped after the housing market crash, which is how Drake got it for less than $8 mil. For that price, he lives in a home on three acres with six bedrooms, a 28-person movie theater, a spa, wine cellar, stables with an equestrian ring, a volleyball court, 10 bathrooms, a game room, and a massive pool attached to a Playboy Mansion-style grotto with a wet bar inside.
Not forgetting to mention that Calabasas was once a home to the 2,800-acre Warner Bros. Ranch, where everything from Casablanca to Sergeant York was filmed.
The Commons at Calabasas
The Commons at Calabasas is an upscale retail and entertainment complex in Calabasas, it draws everyone from such upscale enclaves as Malibu, Thousand Oaks, Calabasas, Sherman Oaks, Ventura, San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley. There are restaurants, grocery stores, shops, a movie theater…it has everything including celebrities.
Kim and Kanye
Kim & Kanye sold their nearly 9,000 square foot home in Bel Air, this month. The couple bought the house in Hidden Hills, California, back in August 2014 from Lisa Marie Presley – but have never lived in it. Instead, they’ve been constantly doing renovations to improve it and they will be soon moving in.
Calabasas Merchandise
Prior to Kanye West’s YEEZY Season 4 presentation in New York City, Kim Kardashian hinted “Calabasas” merch on Snapchat. More of the merch was spotted during the YEEZY Season 4 presentation event in September 2016, West was spotted wearing a pair of “Calabasas” branded jogger pants and a pair of the adidas Powerphase sneaker.
The hype for the adidas x YEEZY Calabasas collection has been heated ever since February’s Yeezy Season 5 fashion show, where more Calabasas-branded and “Lost Hills” (Calabasas neighborhood) items like socks, caps, sweaters were unveiled. And just before the official release on March 28, the first collection images from a Calabasas zine were released. The images featured A$AP Nast and model Ganna Bogdan, shot by Dan Regan, and was art directed by Cali Thornhill DeWitt, who designed West’s Saint Pablo tour merchandise.
adidas Calabasas Logo and the design
If you look closely at the logos, you will realize that the adidas Calabasas logo shares similar design as the 90s Coerver Coaching logo (a global football coaching program inspired by the teachings of Wiel Coerver). So how do both relate? adidas has sponsored the program for decades, which allows the brand to reinterpret the old logo.
The Trackpants are constructed with a double-knit nylon fabric and feature the Three Stripes branding on the front of the pants. This is matched by the Three Stripes running down the side of the pants with “CALABASAS” text embedded within.
The Calabasas Font
Seen on the track pants is a huge “CALABASAS” print which features the font named“Planet Kosmos”. Late last year Kanye and Raf Simons reportedly co-signed agreements with “Planet Kosmos” font creator Mads Rydahl which allows them to use it freely.
