This year was just like last year; bringing some hot surprises when into comes to local music collaborations.
We saw fresh new talent getting a blast in this same year, while some of our favourite acts were cooking some magic to present so memorable collaborations.
Looking back, we got served with good collaborations from stars including AKA, Anatii, Riky Rick amongst others, including breakout efforts from Sho Madjozi, SanEL, Samthing Soweto and a bunch more. As much as it wasn’t easy for us to put together the finest list of 10, we had to leave out some other dope collabos.
Here are Top 10 collaborations of 2017 (in no particular order):
1. Major League feat. Riky Rick, Patoranking, KLY — Do Better
Just as expected, Major League did another magic work with Riky Rick, Patoranking and KLY. The song introduces a totally different sound, which presents the African laid-back groove, with spanking afrobeats elements. Both Patoranking and KLY bring a mellow tune to the vocals part, which makes the song an anthem that suits everyone.
2. Sun-EL Musician feat. Samthing Soweto — Akanamali
One of the biggest song to come out this year – Sun-EL Musician and Samthing Soweto got in studio together to do some impressive work on this anthem. One can describe the jam as a groovy Afropop theme with some mid-tempo vibe to it.
3. HEAVY-K feat. Bucie & Nokwazi — iNDE
Heavy K has persistently delivered great quality music for years now. And this year he got back together with BUCIE after their young beef. With Heavy K’s delivery of dope production, BUCIE and Nokwazi nailed the lyrical part of the song, with some legendary vocal work.
4. Riky Rick feat. Cassper Nyovest, Professor, Major League, Ali Keys — Stay Shining
The fact that Riky Rick managed to spin this classic into a kwaito flava and still make it a jam, is enough to get it on the list. His combination with Cassper Nyovest, Professor, Major League and Ali Keys is just magical. From the first element of the song to the last, this is definitely a nice collaboration.
5. Dj Speesta ft J-Molley, Frank Casino & Zoocci Coke dope — I don’t Know
Seems DJ Speedsta saw an opportunity after blasting ‘Mayo’ back in 2016. He moved a small piece from his board and just invited new acts to play s part on ‘I Don’t Know’ which sounds as good as ‘Mayo’. Ofcourse with his magic – Speedsta easily accommodated all the featured guests to fit in and make the jam a solid collaboration.
6. Major Lazer & DJ Maphorisa feat. Particula (ft. Nasty C, Ice Prince, Patoranking & Jidenna)
Bringing in that international flavour, DJ Maphorisa decided to go hard on this one and his combo worked just fine. By including Ice Prince, Patoranking and Jidenna, he easily showed versatility in his taste of music and style.
7. AKA & Anatii — Don’t Forget To Pray
Without a doubt, ANATII and AKA gave the local Hip-Hop scene an insane flavour this year when they released this collaboration. This reminds us of where ‘The Saga’ began and is still going strong. Yes, this jam was an easy pick to include on the list.
8. Cassper Nyovest ft Gaopele — Destiny
Cassper Nyovest released an impressive album ‘Thuto’ earlier this year and included this jam ‘Destiny’ feat. Goapele. Both jumped in studio with ANATII (on production) to give Malaika’s classic some smooth Hip-Hop flavour.
9. DJ Maphorisa — Midnight Starring ft. DJ Tira, Busiswa, Moonchild Sanelly
Now, this was an unexpected pick, but we couldn’t resist the combination of this jam. Just to mention; DJ Maphorisa, Busiswa and Moonchild Sanelly are different artists and are always willing to explore on whatever genre they fall onto. Seeing three of them being able to fit in nicely on this jam and still make it a club anthem is something ‘magical.’
10. Donald, Tiwa Savage — Rain Drops
Now, this we have to label a ‘special’ collaboration. As solid as this record sounds, we have to give props to both Tiwa and Donald for effortlessly doing magic when they got in studio for this one. ‘Rain Drops’ is a deep and yet soulful house jam with groovy elements to make it a memorable release from Donald himself.
And that’s our Top 10 list, and like we said, there are plenty of nice collabo’s that couldn’t fit on this list. But feel free to let us know your thoughts..
