It is rare finding international artists proudly using a South African name but hit sensation Masego real name Micah Davis of Pink Polo fame who was born in Kingston Jamaica on the 8th of June 1993 and raised in a Christian community in Newport News, Virginia, has tapped into his South African heritage by wearing his stage name proudly. His name Masego meaning blessed was not mistakenly chosen.
As a young church-going kid, Masego was captivated by the drums in church and the beautiful noise in which it made, this drum kit which he heard as a youngster had later sparked interest in him to try out playing a few instruments himself. Not only is he a vocalist but he happens to be a musical genius who also plays guitar piano, trumpet, cello and drums. Masego though specializes in the saxophone, both alto and tenor. The game-changing musician has put a whole different spin to the hip-hop industry – as music lovers we know the genre to be hardcore but Masego enters the music industry with his smooth nostalgic sounds of Trap House Soul.
“My friends and I used to have A LOT of jam sessions and one way or another we found ourselves creating a new sound. Because we were jamming, everything seemed to happen naturally and organically.”
The journey of being a household name wasn’t smooth sail as he had thought, “when I started out in the industry it was hard. I remember chatting with my A/R manager at the time and was constantly told about all the different people who had came in and I knew I had to to be different. I knew I had to catch people’s attention so my fashion sense and music was weird because I had put so much pressure on myself to standout. It took me a while to adjust to find myself which i since have.”
Chatting to the Trap house soul leader this is what he had to say.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Sex symbol, musician, nostalgic
How important is it for artists independence or do you advocate for artist independency?
It really isn’t about being signed or not but making really good music…the rest shall follow based on how good ones music is.
What are some of your musical highlights?
-My biggest one has to be my father seeing im doing music full time.
-Navajo| a colours show is another and a video recording in Paris
– getting my hands tattooed was a big thing because i knew i was never going to get a full time job.
What was your inspiration behind your sophomore album Lady Lady?
The album was inspired by the women I’ve met, had interactions and relationships with. My first project was more about self- expression and with the current project it is all about grown talk. It is all about the man I have become. I mean I have a beard growing now ( chuckles).
Which is your favourite song from Lady Lady?
That is a nasty question i mean how does one choose their favourite kid but if i have to choose I’d say Black Love simply because it made my mother cry.
How has your South African experience been thus far?
It has shown me better purpose of life. I’ve gotten to see animals I haven’t seen before and has changed my outlook on life. It’s sad I have to go back so quick but next time I come I want to see Pretoria Durban and Cape Town.
Which South African artist would you like to work with?
Without a doubt AKA. I saw first hand when his song dropped at the club the crowd went crazy like he was the Drake of America
Apart from Lady Lady. What can we expect from you in 2018?
A LOT OF LEATHER JACKETS
