Kid Fonque announced his most ambitious event series to date.
Kicking off this Saturday, the radio host and DJ/producer will be hosting 12 monthly events that will bring meticulously curated line-ups to some of the country’s top music venues in Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria and Johannesburg. Aptly titled “Kid Fonque Presents…”, the concept behind the tour is centred around bringing his critically acclaimed 5FM radio show, Selective Styles to life – allowing the audience to experience the music in person.
Widely recognized as a tastemaker, Kid Fonque has cemented his position as an important proponent of South African electronic music and club culture over the last 20 years. Resolutely refusing to be bound by genre or to conform to mainstream trends, the respect he is paid by the industry and his fans is a result of his no-compromise attitude to playing and making music. His steady rise in the music industry was bolstered dramatically just over two years ago when, in October 2016, he landed a slot on 5FM.
Having complete control of the music on the show, Kid Fonque has been able to reach more people than ever before. “Radio is a very powerful medium in South Africa and the response to my show has surpassed all my expectations,” he says. “The wide-ranging nature of my show has attracted an incredibly diverse audience – people I would never have been able to reach through my DJ sets, so the real motivation behind these events is to connect with the fans and give them the chance to experience the radio show in real life, in their own city at a great venue. They’ll get to experience a Kid Fonque DJ set, soak up performances by incredible artists and connect with other like-minded music lovers. I couldn’t be more excited.”
In proud association with Ballantine’s, the series launches in Johannesburg this Saturday, 25 August at Untitled with a top-tier selection of acts: Kenzhero, Melo B Jones (Live) and JustThemba.
