The German car manufacturer, BMW has unveiled the all-new BMW 1-Series and the first 1-Series to be front-wheel drive.
This third generation model comes with a makeover on the exterior and interior design.
The new face of the BMW 1 Series and its fresh interpretation of iconic BMW features can be seen clearly from the front. The signature BMW kidney grille is now larger, with far greater presence. For the first time in this model range, the two kidneys now merge in the middle.
The model measures at 4319mm in length, 5mm shorter than its predecessor, 34mm wider and 13mm taller.
The electric panoramic roof available for the first time on the BMW 1 Series lets more light into the interior, where more room and an enhanced feeling of spaciousness meet high-quality materials and innovative details. BMW Operating System 7.0 is featured in the 10.25-inch infotainment screen, plus a 9.2-inch BMW Head-Up Display will also be optionally available.
The interior of the all-new features a sufficient kneeroom for the rear passengers, increased by 33mm. The rear offers a full 19mm of extra headroom if the outward-opening sliding panoramic sunroof is specified. Rear passengers also enjoy 13mm more elbowroom, while the driver and front passenger can look forward to an extra 42mm in this respect.
The model is powered by 3 diesel engines and 2 petrol engines, Cars confirms South Africa will receive the 118i and the range-topping M135i xDrive.
The 118i is powered by a 3-cylinder, 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine with 103 kW and 220 Nm of torque. A 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch transmission will drive the front wheels. Zero to 100 kph for the 118i is claimed at 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 213 kph. Fuel consumption is claimed at 5.7-5.0 L/100km.
For those seeking more driving thrills, the M135i xDrive is the one to go for with a 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine producing 225 kW and 450 Nm of torque. Using an 8-speed sport transmission and equipped with all-wheel drive, the M135i xDrive will dash from zero to 100 kph in 4.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 kph. BMW claims a fuel consumption figure of 7.1-6.8 L/100km.
BMW 1 Series will be unveiled to the public for the first time on 25 – 27 June 2019 on the new BMW Group #NEXTGen presentation platform at BMW Welt in Munich.
The model is expected to start selling from September 2019.
