Service providers; Vodacom and MTN will have to reduce their mobile data prices or face prosecution, after a warning from the Competition Commission.

Competition Commission commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele reveals that both service providers are charging higher rates, calling them to reduce their data prices within two months or face prosecution.

“Vodacom and MTN must immediately reach an agreement with the commission to seize the ongoing petitioning and priced discrimination strategies that may facilitate greater exploitation against the poor.”

Both Vodacom and MTN will have to reduce their data price by around 50%.

The commission also reveals that the data pricing by both companies does not favor the poor while they charge more in South Africa when compared to other countries.
