Some news that comes as no surprise at all.
AfroPunk has announced they have removed Nigerian star Burna Boy from their lineup for the 2019 Joburg show.
In a brief statement they posted on Twitter, they express “now isn’t the right time for him to come”.
“Hey SA fam: After a joint discussion with Burna Boy’s team, we are announcing that he will no longer be part of Joburg’s 2019 lineup. We’ve agreed that now isn’t the right time for him to come. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused to our community.”
The news is no surprise at all, as fans in South Africa were not happy with Burna Boy’s act following recent xenophobic attacks where numerous celebrities and influencers across Africa spoke out against the atrocities.
During this, Burna Boy caused an uproar when he revealed that he will never set foot in this country and even went on to threaten South African rapper AKA, telling him to beef up his security.
Just a month ago, Burna Boy withdrew from performing at the cancelled Africans Unite Concert. The concert was scheduled to take place on 23 November in Cape Town and on 24 November in Pretoria’s Time Square’s Sun Arena.
Afropunk Joburg 2019 will go ahead with headliners such as Solange, Miguel, Masego, Rico Nasty, Sjava, Nao, Gold Link and Zoe Modiga. The festival is expected to be fireworks with such heavy names mentioned – and will take place at the usual venue, Constitution Hill on 30 and 31 December.
