In the latest news related to the coronavirus (COVID-19), giant institutions, the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg have announced that they will be suspending classes and other activities amid coronavirus outbreak in South Africa.
This follows after President Cyril Rmaphosa held a special cabinet meeting on measures to tackle the coronavirus (COVID-19) on Sunday, 15 March 2020.
Meanwhile, Wits announced recently that one medical student has tested positive for #COVIDー19. In a statement, the University confirmed that the student was asymptomatic and attended classes last Monday and Tuesday, without knowledge that the student has contracted the virus.
The university has made the following immediate decisions:
* All students in the affected student’s class have been instructed to go into self-quarantine for 14 days with immediate effect.
* All teaching and University activities involving face to face interaction are postponed including tests, for Monday, 16 March 2020.
* All graduations will be postponed until further notice.
* Employees are expected to come to work in order to ensure that operations continue.
On the other hand, the University of Johannesburg announced that all contact classes, undergraduate and postgraduate, are suspended with effect from 16 March 2020. In addition, all graduation ceremonies are postponed until further notice and staff will continue to report for duty.
