
As the number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases continues to rise in South Africa, Gauteng remains the epicentre of the outbreak in the country, followed by Western Cape and KZN.
Johannesburg has 712 confirmed cases with areas like Alexandra, Wynberg, Sandton, Orange Grove, and Houghton being the hotspots of the virus, according to the latest figures released by the provincial health department.
Other areas striking as hotspots include Rosebank, Randburg, Melville, Parktown + Parktown North, Greenside, Mayfair, and Northcliff.
Ekurhuleni comes the second-highest with 257 cases, followed by Tshwane 125 and Sedibeng 11 as well as West Rand.
Ekurhuleni (257 cases)
More cases are recorded from Ekurhuleni (north)ย with 105ย cases from areas including Kempton Park, Edenvale, Tembisa, and Bapsfontein.
Followed by Ekurhuleni (south) listing areas like Alberton, Thokoza, Vosloorus, Boksburg, Germiston and Katlehong with 73 confirmed cases.
City of Tshwane (125 cases)
Lyttelton, Eldoraigne, Waterkloof, Olievenhoutbosch, Rooihuiskraal, Silverton, Centurion, Brooklyn, and Hatfield are marked under (City of Tshwane 1 sub-district) with 38 confirmed cases.
Followed by Mamelodi, Silverlakes, Garsfontein, Lethabong, Watloo, Eesterus, Wilgers, Equestria, Lynnwood, Queenswood, Brummeria marked under (City of Tshwane 6 sub-district) with 37 confirmed cases.
In a statement, the department said: “Out of a total of 7103 contacts traced (these are individuals who were in contact with people who tested positive for COVID-19), 2973 people have completed the 14 days monitoring period with no symptoms and therefore they are de-isolated”.
The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Gauteng as 21 April sits at 1199, with 781 recoveries and 7 deaths. This means that the total number of active cases in the province sits at 411.
