This week we bring you Rafiki as our movie of the week and just in time for Pride month.
Rafiki is a Kenyan drama movie that was released back in 2018. And someone you might have watched this movie, but if you haven’t, it’s time you do.
It is directed by Wanuri Kahiu and stars Samantha Mugatsia as Kena, Sheila Munyiva as Ziki, Neville Misati as Blacksta, Nini Wacera as Mercy, Jimmy Gathu as John Mwaura and Charlie Karumi as Waireri to name a few.
Rafiki is the story of romance that grows between two young women, Kena and Ziki, amidst family and political pressures around LGBT rights in Kenya.
Kena and Ziki live very different lives in Nairobi. Kena works in her father’s shop and awaits the start of nursing school, while Ziki passes the days hanging out with her friends and making up dance routines. Their paths cross when their fathers run against each other for seats in the County Assembly, and they find themselves drawn to each other. Soon their interest grows to affection and the girls find ways to love each other despite the ever-watching gaze of the neighborhood.
The movie had its international premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, it was the first Kenyan film to be screened at the festival.
Rafiki is currently streaming on Showmax.
