On Sunday, 28 February 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on South Africa’s ongoing measures regarding the second wave of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Following his last address, the president announced that the country will move to Level 1, and new regulations on curfew, sale of alcohol, and social gatherings.
Here’s a quick round-up of Ramaphosa’s address and new regulations:
– Phase two of the vaccine roll-out in late April or early May, will include the elderly, essential workers, persons living or working in institutional settings and those with co-morbidities.
– 20 million doses from Pfizer, which will be delivered from the second quarter.
– Additionally, we have secured 12 million vaccine doses from the COVAX facility and are in the process of finalising our dose allocation from the African Union.
– 2.8 million Johnson & Johnson doses will be delivered in the second quarter and the rest spread throughout the year.
– Only five airports will be open for international travel with standard infection control measures. These are OR Tambo, Cape Town, King Shaka, Kruger Mpumalanga and Lanseria airports.
– The 33 land border posts that have been closed throughout this period will remain closed, while the other 20 will remain open.
– The country moves to Alert level 1 from 1 March 2021
– Curfew midnight – 4am
– Gatherings will be permitted, subject to limitations on size, adherence to social distancing and other health protocols. These include religious, social, political and cultural.. Night clubs remain closed. Night vigils or gatherings after funerals not allowed.
