DJ Stokie delivers the iPiano e’Soweto documentary series “iPiano e’Soweto: The Documentary” along with Universal Music Group, South Africa and directed by Katlego Phore.
iPiano e’Soweto follows DJ Stokie and presiding voice in the narrative, DJ Mageza as they take us on a journey of where Amapiano began and came to infiltrate Soweto before the world. Initially derived from the streets of Eastrand. DJ Stokie is considered the pioneer of Amapiano in Soweto, where the sound formed its niche before dominating the local airwaves.
DJ Stokie released his 2020 album My Journey as a body of work that not only told his journey as a pioneer. But he paid homage to the township that made him who he is as the “Superman” of Soweto.
iPiano e’Soweto: The Documentary comes as DJ Stokie prepares to release the visuals for his upcoming single, iPiano e’Soweto, featuring Daliwonga and Nia Pearl. The track finally receives its time in the sun as one of the runaway hits of the album My Journey.

DJ Stokie, whose real name is Setoki Mbatha started his career in the 90’s from his room in Mzimhlophe. The self-taught music maestro is inspired by the likes of Soweto’s top DJ’s; Mpopo, Fetsi, Ma-Leven, Mahlomola, Mdoo, amongst others. Stokie’s success traces back to 2006 when he became a finalist in the Mad Half Hour, a feature on Joburg’s popular youth station, YFM. The station’s listeners were inspired by his piano fingers and Stokie found himself gigging in townships across Johannesburg. Today, he plays alongside some of SA’s music legends – DJ Christos, Vinni da Vinci, Ralf Gum, China. Stokie host a weekly slot, every Monday at 5:05pm at Johannesburg’s biggest regional radio station, Jozi FM.
