Following the announcement that the country will now move to adjusted Level 3, President Cyril Ramaphosa also revealed that the R350 social relief of distress — known as the “Covid-19 grant” will be continued until March 2022.
“To support those who have no means of supporting themselves, we are reinstating the Social Relief of Distress Grant to provide a monthly payment of R350 until the end of March 2022,” said Ramaphosa during his address. “This has been made possible by the slight improvement we have seen in our revenue collection”.
The grant was originally part of the R500 billion economic and social relief measures announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in April 2020, as part of the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is intended for persons in such a dire material need that they are unable to meet their families’ most basic needs.
South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) discontinued the grant this year (30th April 2021).
Now onto the good news, the R350 grant will be extended to include more people, including unemployed caregivers currently receiving child care grants.
“We are expanding the number of people who are eligible for this grant by allowing unemployed caregivers who currently receive a Child Support Grant to apply,” he added.
Details on the reinstatement of the grant, including the process for application, will be announced shortly.
