Viola Davis has shared the first look teaser of The Woman King, the upcoming historical film based on the real-life story of the Dahomey Amazons.
Seputla Sebogodi, Thuso Mbedu, and John Boyega make up some of the heavy cast on the film.
The movie also stars Lashana Lynch, Adrienne Warren, Sheila Atim, Jayme Lawson, Masali Baduza, Angélique Kidjo, Jimmy Odukoya, Thando Dlomo, Jordan Bolger, Zozibini Tunzi and Makgotso M.
The drama is inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Viola Davis as Nanisca, a military unit general, and Thuso Mbedu as Nawi, an ambitious recruit. Davis and Mbedu will fight enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.
Davis is producing the project alongside Cathy Schulman, Julius Tennon, and Maria Bello.
Sharing the first look at ‘The Woman King’, Davis said:
