While Comair is taking an L, its rival FlySafair is heading for expansion and plans to add at least 10 new routes across Africa.
The South African airline plans to operate regional routes including Nairobi, Lusaka and Maputo including holiday destinations including Victoria Falls and Zanzibar.
The airline will further expand its fleet with five new planes by early next year.
Comair, which owns Kulula and operates British Airways locally, accounted for 40% of domestic air trips in South Africa.
Last week, Comair announced that it had applied for liquidation after failing to secure funds to keep operations going.
“We did our utmost to secure the funding, but when we were unable to do so had no option to lodge the application. It is an extremely sad day for the company, its employees, its customers and South African aviation.”
