South Africa’s classic drama Yizo Yizo by Bomb Productions will be available to stream on Netflix later this month.
The series made a debut on SABC 1 back in 1999 and pursued 3 seasons till 2004. The debut episode attracted around 3 million viewers.
The series is set in a fictional school, Supatsela High, in the township of Johannesburg and follows the life of the students and teachers at the school.
The drama looks at problems faced by students in South Africa’s education system as a result of a breakdown in the culture of learning and teaching leading to a sense of helplessness among parents, students and teachers.
Issues of drug abuse, gangsterism, and rape are tackled. The story revolves around an autocratic cane-wielding principal who is forced to leave after he assaults a pupil. His successor is weak and corrupt and the situation in the school deteriorates with gangsters and criminal elements filtering through.
The principal is eventually dismissed and replaced by Grace Letsatsi and under her leadership, the community gets together to retake ownership of the school. The students are empowered and able to express their views.
Season 1 will be available to stream on 21 April and Season 2 on 28 April.
