Netflix puts an end to password sharing in the United States

Say goodbye to password sharing on Netflix. In a move that has been anticipated for some time, the streamer has officially put an end to password sharing among its subscribers in the United States.

Starting today, users will be required to pay an additional $7.99 per month if they wish to share their account with someone outside of their household. This follows a similar ban that was recently implemented in other countries.

The announcement was made through an email sent to Netflix members who have been sharing their accounts outside of their household. The email states that a Netflix account is intended for use by a single household, allowing everyone living under the same roof to enjoy the streaming service across various devices and locations. To enhance account management, Netflix has introduced new features such as Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.

The email sent to customers provides further details on the changes in sharing between households. It emphasizes that Netflix can still be accessed on personal devices or TVs at hotels or vacation homes, making it convenient for subscribers on the go. To maintain control over account usage, members are advised to review the devices signed in to their account and sign out any unauthorized devices. Changing passwords is also encouraged to ensure account security.

For those who still wish to share their Netflix account with someone outside of their household, there are two options available. First, individuals can transfer a profile to a new membership that the other person pays for. This allows them to have their own account while still enjoying shared content. Alternatively, subscribers can purchase an extra member slot for $7.99 per month to share their account with someone who doesn’t live with them.

This crackdown is expected to expand to more territories including South Africa.
