E-HAILING OPERATORS BANNED IN ALL MALLS IN SOWETO FOR 3 MONTHS
The Soweto United E-Hailing Association and the Soweto Taxi Association have agreed on a temporary solution to the war between the two.
After a meeting this week, it has been decided that for the next three months, e-hailing service operators will not be allowed to pick-up or drop off passengers inside the mall.
This comes after complaints from the Taxi Association that e-hailing operators park in the mall to get commuters.
Several E-hailing cars were recently torched at Maponya Mall and Protea Mall, with E-hailing operators saying the taxi association members are behind the violent attacks.
ORLANDO PIRATES STAR THEMBINKOSI LORCH FOUND GUILTY OF ASSAULT
The Randburg Magistrates Court has found Thembinkosi Lorch guilty of assaulting his then-girlfriend, Fundiswa Nokuphiwa Mathithibala, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
This case relates to a complaint laid at the Midrand Police Station by Mathithibala in September 2020.
Mathithibala says she was visiting Lorch when he left her at his home to go out with his friend.
She says when it got late, she texted him, asking him to return her car keys. On arrival, an argument ensued, and Lorch became violent towards her and started to strangle her.
Lorch will return to court on 28 July 2023, to hear his fate.
NELSON MANDELA UNIVERSITY STUDENT STABBED TO DEATH
A student has been arrested for the killing of a fellow student at Nelson Mandela University. The student was fatally stabbed at a residence at George Campus on Tuesday.
The institution says the motive for the incident is still unknown, and police are investigating. The university has moved toward providing support and counselling for students.
SA AVOIDS A RECESSION IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2023
South Africa has avoided a recession in the first quarter of the year after recording 0.4 percent gross domestic product growth.
This was announced by Statistics South Africa when it released the latest GDP growth figures for the first quarter of 2023.
Stats SA says manufacturing, transport, and construction were the drivers of this slight growth.
Economic activity increased by 1.5 percent in manufacturing and by 0.6 percent in finance.
PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA APOLOGISES TO HAMMANSKRAAL RESIDENTS FOR INFRINGING ON THEIR RIGHT TO CLEAN WATER
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the government has failed the people of Hammanskraal when it comes to clean and safe water.
Ramaphosa was addressing the community of Hammanskraal on Thursday for the first time since the cholera outbreak in the area.
He says the government has infringed on their right to clean water.
The president says they will be working tirelessly to ensure that the Hammanskraal water issue is solved.
THE DEATH TOLL IN THE CHOLERA OUTBREAK RISES TO 31
The cholera outbreak has now claimed the lives of 31 people. This was confirmed by the Department of Health on Thursday.
The Department says 29 of the deaths have been recorded in Gauteng, while Mpumalanga and the Free State have also recorded one fatality each. Hammanskraal in Pretoria has been the epicentre of this disease.
UNIVERSITY OF FORT HARE STUDENTS ARRESTED FOR VIOLENT PROTESTS
Eastern Cape police arrested 12 students from the University of Fort Hare for alleged malicious damage to property and burglary at a business premises.
The students, aged between 19 and 22, looted a cafeteria and damaged several UFH properties at the campus in Alice on Sunday night.
The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Dr. Blade Nzimande, has condemned these incidents of arson. Nzimande has welcomed the decision by university management to closely monitor all examination venues by providing additional security.
