The South African women’s national soccer team is commonly known as Banyana Banyana. They currently hold the title of African champions, having emerged victorious in the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations held in Morocco.
However, on Sunday, 2 July 2023, they decided to refrain from participating in their send-off match against Botswana. This boycott was motivated by a range of concerns and issues with the South African Football Association (SAFA). Prior to their departure for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the team is demanding improved treatment, fair remuneration, and better working conditions from SAFA. In an effort to address the situation, the Sports Minister, Zizi Kodwa, is scheduled to meet with the South African Football Players Union to discuss the appropriate course of action.
In the midst of that, coach Desiree Ellis was compelled to assemble a last-minute makeshift team. However, the outcome of the event proved chaotic as Botswana effortlessly defeated their inexperienced counterparts, securing a resounding 5-0 victory.
Since that incident, there have been varied responses to Banyana’s choice to abstain from participating in the match.
