Crime statistics: 6 228 counts of murders recorded between April and June 2023

On Friday, 18 August 2023—Police Minister, General Bheki Cele, presented the quarterly crime statistics, reflecting on crimes reported and detected by the South African Police Service (SAPS) from 01 April to 30 June 2023.

In summary:

– Between April and June this year, police recorded 6 228 counts of murders.

– Out of the 6 228 people killed from April to June, about 1 188 were women and children.

– Majority of the people murdered during this period were killed either during an argument, an act of vigilantism or their lives were cut short while being robbed.
