The rivalry between MultiChoice and the SABC seems to be going further and further. In recent move, the SABC has removed its most popular soapies from DStv Catch-up and PVR.
This means that viewers will no longer have the convenience of catching up on beloved shows like Skeem Saam, Uzalo, Generations: The Legacy, and Muvhango via the DStv Catch Up service.
Instead, the exclusive way to access these soap operas will now be through the SABC’s dedicated streaming platform, SABC+ and VIU. A notice posted on DStv Catch Up states, “At the request of SABC, the program will be removed from DStv Catch Up from September 18th.”
This move highlights the ongoing competition and negotiations between MultiChoice and the SABC, as both entities vie for their share of the broadcasting and streaming market in South Africa.
There was also a recent riffle between the two broadcasters over Rugby World Cup broadcasting rights. MultiChoice ended up accepting SABC’s proposal, giving them broadcast rights to 16 matches.
