In their third co-production, Showmax and CANAL+ have come together for a brand new heart-pounding and car spinning drama series “Spinners”.
The 8-episode series introduces us to Ethan, a 17-year-old driver entangled in the world of a local gang. Desperate to support his younger brother but increasingly disillusioned with the criminal life, Ethan stumbles upon a potential escape route through spinning, an extreme motorsport where his driving skills could find a more purposeful outlet. However, the looming gang war threatens to shatter his hopes.
This co-production between Showmax and CANAL+ features a stellar cast, with Cantona James and Chelsea Thomas from “Arendsvlei” taking the lead roles. Joining them are familiar faces like Dillon Windvogel from “Blood & Water“ and SAFTA winner Brendon Daniels, known for his roles in “Zulu,” “Skemerdans,” and “Five Fingers for Marseille.”

Spinners is directed by Jaco Bouwer, an accomplished filmmaker whose work has received accolades, including the 2021 SXSW Best Cinematography award for “Gaia” and the 2022 SAFTA Best TV Drama award for “4 Mure.”
The series is co-created by producer Joachim Landau and showrunner Benjamin Hoffman of Empreinte Digitale. This multi-lingual drama, featuring English, Kaaps, and Afrikaans, is co-produced by Ramadan Suleman, a recipient of prestigious awards like Locarno, Amiens, and FESPACO, known for works like “Zulu Love Letter” and “Fools,” from Natives at Large, Spinners’ local co-production company. Notably, DJ Ready D is not only the music supervisor but also the composer of tracks for the series.
The series will be available to stream on Showmax on 8 November 2023, with new episodes on Wednesdays.
