Statistics South Africa has unveiled the Census 2022 data, revealing that the South African population has surged to 62 million, which is 62 027 503 to be exact.
Within the provinces, Gauteng maintains its status as the most populous, boasting 15 million residents, while the Northern Cape remains the smallest, with a population of 1.3 million.
Notably, the Western Cape has moved from being the 5th-largest province (1996 ranking) to now secure the position of the 3rd-largest in 2022.
According to the report, among the 62 million population, there are 30,076,814 males (48.5%) and 31,947,531 females (51.5%).
Of this population, the demographic breakdown reveals the following composition:
– Black African – 50,485,026 (81.4%)
– Coloured – 5,052,299 (8.2%)
– Indian/Asian – 1,697,468 (2.7%)
– White – 4,503,780 (7.3%)
– and Other – 247,353 (0.4%).
The report further shows that in 2022, 60.1% of kids aged 0-4 went to ECD schools. The Western Cape led with 69.5%, and Gauteng followed at 66%. For those aged 20 or more, the rate of having matric/NSC/Grade 12 went up from 16.3% in 1996 to 37.6% in 2022.
