In 2023, Apple clinched the title of the world’s leading smartphone maker for the first time globally in terms of shipments, ending Samsung‘s 12-year dominance, according to recent data from the International Data Corporation (IDC).
IDC reports that Apple shipped around 234.6 million smartphones in 2023, slightly edging out Samsung, which shipped 226.6 million. In addition, it suggests that Apple’s success is due to the high demand for the latest iPhones and the growing regulatory hurdles for Samsung in China.
In Q4 2023, the smartphone market rebounded with 8.5% year-over-year growth and 326.1 million shipments, exceeding expectations. Apple led with a 24% market share, while Samsung followed with 17%, driven by lower-priced mid-range devices in emerging markets, according to Canalys.
The Data Corporation company notes that the Android space is diversifying as Huawei expands in China, while brands like OnePlus, Honor, Google, and others introduce competitive devices.
