Gauteng will be getting new license plates equipped with advanced technology in coming months.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi highlighted this will be to combat criminal activities, particularly those involving vehicles.
The high-tech plates are designed to enhance security measures and contribute to proactive crime prevention efforts.
The plates will incorporate QR codes linking directly to the vehicle owner, facilitating quick and efficient scanning by law enforcement agencies. Notably, the advanced plates can reportedly be detected when vehicles cross provincial borders, adding an extra layer of monitoring and control.
An official general public launch date is still yet to be announced, but government vehicles will have the new plates starting from April 2024.
This announcement was made during a ceremony where the Gauteng provincial government formalized an agreement with Vumacam, a surveillance firm renowned for its extensive network of nearly 7,000 CCTV cameras across the province. While the exact mechanisms for cross-border plate tracking were not detailed during the event, Premier Lesufi underscored the importance of each motorist obtaining a new registration number when applying for a new car license disc.
