Netflix‘s South African teen drama, “Blood & Water,” returns with Season 4, consisting of six new episodes. While the show had garnered attention and acclaim in its earlier seasons, the latest installment fails to live up to its predecessors, leaving viewers with a mixed bag of emotions.
The decision to extend the series into a fourth season raises questions, especially considering the satisfying conclusion of Season 3.
Season 4 picks up from the aftermath of Season 3, where the human trafficking ring that haunted protagonist Puleng Khumalo (Ama Qamata) and her friend Fiks (Khosi Ngema) is dismantled. With the key culprits behind bars, one would expect a seamless continuation of the story. However, the plot takes an unexpected turn as Puleng becomes the target of blackmail by an anonymous figure.
The pacing of Season 4 feels sluggish compared to the previous seasons, and the plot appears to meander without a clear sense of direction. The attempt to rekindle the suspense and danger falls short, resulting in a narrative that feels prolonged and tiresome.
While Ama Qamata delivers a commendable performance as Puleng, the lackluster writing and disjointed storytelling hinder the overall impact of the season. The weak execution of the plot leaves viewers yearning for the gripping storytelling that characterized the show’s initial seasons.
For fans of the show, Season 4 might leave them wanting more of the compelling storytelling that made Blood & Water a standout show.
