While the current fertility rate stands at 2.1 births, South African women, on average, are giving birth to 2.3 children. Factors such as improved healthcare, access to contraceptives, delayed marriages, and the financial implications of child-rearing contribute to this shift.
Notably, 40% of babies are born into households earning less than R5,000 per month. Experts anticipate significant impacts on the labor market and healthcare as these trends continue.
