Massmart, a part of the global retail giant Walmart, is trying out something new: they’re launching a trial project to test small Makro stores in malls. These smaller Makro stores will be placed inside existing Game stores.
But don’t worry, this doesn’t spell the end for Game. Instead, it’s a proactive move to keep up with changes in what shoppers want and how the market works. Game, a familiar name in Massmart’s lineup, has been struggling financially for a while now, so it’s time for some fresh ideas.
Evan Walker, who manages portfolios at 36ONE Asset Management, thinks this plan is a good one. He believes that swapping out some Game stores for smaller Makro outlets in malls could bring big advantages.
These small Makro stores will cover around 3,000 square meters and will offer a carefully chosen range of products. They’ll also have their own unique branding to set them apart from the Game stores.
