The BMW 7 Series has scooped the title for the 2024 SA Car of the Year.
In a field of tough competitors, the 7 Series stood out as the clear winner in the luxury class, earning praise from both judges and enthusiasts. Alongside this win, the BMW X1 took the spotlight in the family class, while the M2 impressed in the performance category.
This win adds another feather to BMW’s cap, bringing their total victories in the esteemed competition to seven. It’s a testament to their ongoing dedication to excellence in automotive engineering and design.
The evaluation process, overseen by 27 jurors from the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ), highlighted the 7 Series among 18 finalists. Notably, the Suzuki Fronx secured second place, followed by the BMW M2 in third.

With 80 qualifying vehicles across various categories, the 2024 COTY finalists showcased the pinnacle of automotive innovation and craftsmanship. Among them, the Mahindra Scorpio-N stood out, winning the Adventure SUV category and earning the esteemed “motor enthusiasts choice” award through public votes in a dynamic social media campaign.
Other category winners included the Suzuki Fronx in the Budget/Compact category and the Toyota Urban Cruiser in the Compact Family category. The Mercedes-Benz GLC triumphed in the Premium category, while the Volkswagen Amarok claimed victory in the 4×4 Double Cab category.
In a celebration of luxury and performance, the BMW 7 Series and M2 stood tall, reinforcing BMW’s commitment to delivering outstanding driving experiences and innovative design.
